Is Facebook blowing their own foot off?

Everyday we hear about privacy issues with Facebook and most of the time they make changes without warning. Soon Facebook Fan Pages will have 200px less of content space to provide for more ad space. There is also a rumor that they may start charging for Fan pages on a monthly basis.

For me, I have been wondering how much is too much? When will there be something else that comes out. Think back about two years ago when MySpace was leading the way and Facebook was in a far second. Fast forward to present and Facebook has grown and continues to grow on a monthly basis. MySpace is really no where to be found.

Talking to a good friend and business partner, Derek Lee of Visual Alliance Media, we discussed the issues that we’ve been seeing or hearing about with Facebook and we both think that in the next one to two years there will be something coming out that will compete with Facebook. Honestly, I hope so, as in my mind competition is always a good thing.

What do you think? One, do you see a competitor coming out? Two, what’s your thoughts on the Facebook changes?

I feel like Facebook is starting to get to that point of no return where they believe that they’ve cornered the market so well that they can make whatever decisions they like with little negative impact to them.

I haven’t seen much in the way of competing sites as of yet, but there are some really intelligent minds out there that could certainly give Facebook a run for their money. Hopefully they’re sitting at some restaurant under a palm tree figuring out their strategy on the back of a napkin.

As far as the changes go, if they continue down this path of deciding for us what level of sharing we’re going to do, I think that they’ll start to see a mass exodus in the future. People will only allow for so many snafus before they decide enough is enough.

Sorry to be a pest, but just that fast I stumbled across something worthy of note. Some NYU students have raised enough money to build the “anti-Facebook” called Diaspora (http://joindiaspora.com).

Don’t know anything about it yet, but thought I would share. Plus, apparently, some people are organizing a Facebook exodus for May 31st. Guess this could get interesting after all.

Well said Derek. I believe you’re 100% correct and at some point they will be a major competitor out there.
